5 Things a Skater Must Have

Anyone who wants to learn how to skate you must know the essentials to become one. Everyone needs to know what he or she need. I asked a couple of skaters and this is what they told me.

1. Skateboard

There is a wide range of different boards people use. Ian Hansford a sixteen year old skater from Chicago Illinois told me “the five most used skateboard brands used would be Habitat, Plan B, Element, Powell, and Blind.” Ian told me he prefers his boards from Citizen Skate Shop, located 920 West Wilson Ave. Ian said, “ a person can buy whatever board he or she wants but when you purchase it you may have to make some adjustments to the wheels, trucks, or even the barrings.” Once you have your board and its fit to your liking, own it.

2. Passion

Now what you all must be thinking is this is so lame. Truthfully everyone needs to have a passion in order to do something well. Whether it be Skateboarding, rollerblading, surfing, dirt boarding, ect. A person has to have a desire to excel in it. If u buy your board and try out the tricks a few times and don’t get it. Then u decide to quit your going to start quitting other things in your life besides sports. Keep trying no matter how hard it seems, remember you will get it eventually

3. Skate Gear

I spoke with another young skater named is Kevin Wilson. He is a Chicagoan and he explained to me that it doesn’t really matter what you wear, as long as you don’t mind something getting torn or ripped. What he did tell me is what shoes to wear, Kevin said, “The best type of shoes to wear would be Nike SB, Vans, or Element. Either way you want to pick shoes with good grip, the last thing u want is to do a trick and have the board whack you.” On pants its pretty obvious at this point. Don’t wear dress pants because you know your mom would get pissed off when u mess them up. Listen I’m not your mom, but choose wisely on what u wear to skate.

4. Tools

Every skater will have a problem with their board, whether it is the grip tape, wheels, barrings, trucks, or whatever. You need to be able to fix your board. Most people use their household wrenches or they go to their skate shop to get it fixed. People can also purchase tool bags or kits online.

5. Friends

From two of the skaters I’ve talked with they both have told me that young skaters should find a crew, a group of people who enjoy to skate just as much as you do. If or when you find that group it’s most likely you will have a much better time learning how to skate. If one of those friends like to video or take pictures you all watch the film together. Skateboarding nothing but fun, so get out there and try it out.
